Rear garden shady border

Key Information

  • The addition of a simple border along a boundary fence added light and interest to an area in partial shade.

  • Client Brief
    • Create a small boarder of shrubs and flowers to soften the boundary fence
    • A planting scheme that brings light to a shady corner of the garden
    • Shade loving plants that provide colour, movement and scent

Previously, the lawn went up to the boundary wall and the new open trellis fence. Trish wanted to create a semi transparent barrier without feeling too enclosed.

We agreed a colour palette of whites, pinks and purples repeated using evergreen and deciduous shrubs and a mixture of perennials and biannual.

The overall planting plan uses height, texture, movement and scent to add interest.

“We look out onto the lawn in our small back garden which ran up to our boundary wall and I wanted to create interest and a smile. It was a small project, a ‘mini garden makeover’ that has made such a big difference whether I am sitting in the house or walking in and out of the garden. It brightens up my day”
